The NSW Government has announced a funding boost of twelve million dollars to the Community Transport sector over the next four years! The Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian visited our Penrith office on Wednesday to make the announcement, accompanied by the Hon. Stuart Ayres Minister for Police, Roza Sage Member for Blue Mountains and Tanya Davies Member for Mulgoa. During her visit to Great Community Transport Ms Berejiklian said “Without community transport, thousands of people would struggle to do what many of us take for granted.. [and] I look forward to continuing to work hand-in-hand with community transport providers, customers and volunteers to make sure we’re providing the crucial funds and support needed to keep up with demand.”

Great Community Transport Inc. has proudly provided transport care to eligible Blue Mountains and Penrith residents for more than twenty eight years. This commitment has not changed in face of the Commonwealth and State Governments Reforms to aged and disability services.

Due to the current reforms, Transport for NSW has advised all community transport providers that the Commonwealth and State are moving towards a customer centred environment focused on delivering more capacity to an ageing population by lowering administrative expenses so that service offerings can expand. Underpinning this change, Transport for NSW is investing in new technologies and enablement projects to enhance providers’ capacity and performance to meet the expectations of all stakeholders. It is also assumed that these changes will lead to an increase in frontline service delivery, “more people in seats”, and a decrease in administration burden, “cutting red tape”.

GCT is examining the feasibility of a co-operative model with other like-minded community transport providers. This will allow GCT to remain sustainable and provide high quality service delivery whilst keeping its local community identity , profile and focus to ensure our clients get the same or improved service delivery into the future. Our clients deserve the best and this is what we will achieve together.

Stay tuned for further updates.

The Great Walk Foundation is a group of committed people who undertake a walk from Bathurst to Blaxland each year to raise money for charity. The Foundation’s mission is to focus on the greater needs within the Penrith/Blue Mountains/Hawkesbury regions. The Foundation has raised in excess of $600,000 and many local charities and organisations have benefited. Among the charities who have received generous donations from the Foundation is GREAT Community Transport.

GCT was delighted to receive a Tarago Van in May 2012 to Transport Blue Mountains residents to their medical appointments. GREAT has a number of “Family” vehicles named in honour of GCT volunteers who have passed away from cancer. In keeping with this tradition the new Tarago was named in honour of Jimmy Small. Jim was a long time resident of Winmalee and Yellow Rock. He was dedicated to the communities he lived and worked in and a great supporter of the Foundation.

The Foundation approached GREAT in April of this year to say it would like to donate another vehicle. A new Tarago has just arrived. The new vehicle has been named “Bruce Carter” after another supporter of the Great Walk Foundation who passed away. Look out for “Bruce” as he travels all around Penrith taking Penrith Residents to their medical appointments.

Thank you GREAT WALK FOUNDATION, your commitment to helping the Community is simply amazing!!!!!!
